English Translation
'Ali ibn Bahr narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yahya ibn 'Abbad, from his father 'Abbad ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: Al-Harith ibn Khuzamah brought the last two verses of [Surah] Bara'ah (Tawbah): {There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves...} to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه). He said: 'Who is with you to testify to this?' He said: 'I do not know, by Allah, except that I testify that I heard them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I committed them to memory and preserved them.' 'Umar said: 'And I testify that I heard them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then he said: 'If these were three verses, I would have made them a separate surah. So find a surah from the Quran and place them in it.' So they were placed at the end of Bara'ah.
