Hadith #235

English Translation

'Abdullah ibn Bakr narrated to us, Hatim, namely Ibn Abi Saghirah, narrated to us, one of the descendants of 'Abd al-Muttalib narrated to me. He said: 'Ali ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas came to us during one of those pilgrimage seasons. I heard him say: My father 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas narrated to me, from his father al-'Abbas (رضي الله عنهم), that he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am your uncle. My age has grown old and my time has drawn near. Teach me something by which Allah will benefit me.' He said: 'O 'Abbas, you are my uncle, and I cannot avail you anything against Allah. But ask your Lord for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter.' He said this three times. Then he came to him at the turn of the year and said the same to him. [Second chain:] Rawh narrated to us, Abu Yunus al-Qushayri, Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah, narrated to us, a man from the descendants of 'Abd al-Muttalib narrated to me. He said: 'Ali ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas came to us, and the descendants of 'Abd al-Muttalib were present. He said: I heard 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas narrating from his father al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib. He said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am your uncle. My age has grown old.' Then he mentioned the same meaning.
