Hadith #407
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ قَابُوسَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ آخِرُ شِدَّةٍ يَلْقَاهَا الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمَوْتُ وَفِي قَوْلِهِ { يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ } قَالَ كَدُرْدِ
يِّ الزَّيْتِ وَفِي قَوْلِهِ { آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ } قَالَ جَوْفُ اللَّيْلِ وَقَالَ هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا ذَهَابُ الْعِلْمِ قَالَ هُوَ ذَهَابُ الْعُلَمَاءِ مِنْ الْأَرْضِ

English Translation
Jarir narrated from Qabus, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: 'The last hardship that the believer encounters is death.' And regarding His saying {The Day the sky will be like murky oil} [70:8], he said: 'Like the dregs of oil.' And regarding His saying {during the hours of the night} [20:130], he said: 'The middle of the night.' And he said: 'Do you know what the departure of knowledge is? It is the departure of the scholars from the earth.'
