English Translation

Abu Mu'awiyah and Waki' — with the same meaning — both said: al-A'mash narrated to us from Mujahid — Waki' said: I heard Mujahid narrating — from Tawus, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: the Prophet ﷺ passed by two graves and said: 'They are being punished, and they are not being punished for something major. As for one of them, he used not to clean himself from urine' — Waki' said: 'from his urine' — 'and as for the other, he used to go about with slander (namimah).' Then he took a fresh palm branch, split it in two, and planted one in each grave. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you do this?' He said: 'Perhaps their punishment will be lightened so long as they (the branches) have not dried up.' Waki' said: 'dried up.' Husayn also narrated from Shayban, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a garden wall in Madinah and heard the voices of two people being punished in their graves — and he mentioned it, saying: 'until they dry up — or so long as they have not dried up.'
