English Translation

Yahya narrated from Sufyan, Sulayman — meaning al-A'mash — narrated to me, from Yahya ibn 'Umarah, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: Abu Talib fell ill, so the Quraysh came to him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit him. There was a seat for one man near his head, so Abu Jahl stood up and sat in it. They said (to Abu Talib): 'Your nephew speaks against our gods.' He said (to the Prophet ﷺ): 'What is the matter with your people that they complain about you?' He said: 'O uncle, I want them to say one word by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizyah.' He said: 'What is it?' He said: 'La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah).' They stood up and said: 'Has he made the gods into one god?' And it was revealed: {Sad. By the Quran, full of reminder} — and he recited until he reached — {Indeed, this is an astonishing thing} [38:1-5]. Abu Usamah also narrated from al-A'mash, from 'Abbad, and mentioned a similar report.
