English Translation

Waki' narrated from Sufyan, from Adam ibn Sulayman — the freed slave of Khalid ibn Khalid — who said: I heard Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: When this verse was revealed: {Whether you reveal what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it} [2:284], something entered their hearts that had never entered before. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Say: We hear, we obey, and we submit.' So Allah cast faith into their hearts, and Allah (عز وجل) revealed: {The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying: We make no distinction between any of His messengers. And they say: We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have the reward of what good it has earned, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. Our Lord, do not take us to account if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with that which we have no ability to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people} [2:285-286].
