English Translation

Mus'ab ibn Sa'd narrated from his father (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'Four verses were revealed concerning me. On the Day of Badr, I obtained a sword and came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me as extra spoils. He said: Put it back. Then he stood and said: O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me. He said: Put it back. Then he stood again and said: O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me — am I to be treated like one who has no worth? the Prophet ﷺ said: Put it back where you took it from. So this verse was revealed: They ask you about the spoils. Say: The spoils are for Allah and the Messenger. He said: An Ansari man prepared food and invited us, and we drank wine until we became intoxicated. The Ansar and Quraysh boasted. The Ansar said: We are better than you. Quraysh said: We are better than you. A man from the Ansar took the jawbone of a camel and struck Sa'd's nose and split it. So Sa'd's nose was split. Then this verse was revealed: O you who believe, indeed wine, gambling, sacrificial altars, and divining arrows are an abomination from the work of Shaytan, so avoid them that you may succeed. And the mother of Sa'd said: Has not Allah commanded them to be dutiful? By Allah, I will not eat food nor drink until I die or you disbelieve in Muhammad. When they wanted to feed her, they would pry open her mouth with a stick and pour it in. Then this verse was revealed: And We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited Sa'd while he was ill. He said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth? He said: No. He said: Then two-thirds? He said: No. He said: Then one-third? He was silent [and people adopted that].'
