English Translation

Abu Sa'id narrated to us, Sulayman ibn Bilal narrated to us, from 'Amr — meaning Ibn Abi 'Amr — from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما). A man asked him about the bath on Friday — whether it is obligatory. He said: 'No, but whoever does it, it is better for him. And whoever does not bathe, it is not obligatory upon him. I will tell you how the bath began: People were in hardship and wore wool garments, and they would work. Their masjid was small with a low ceiling. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out on a hot day while the people were sweating in their wool garments until their odors disturbed one another. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smelled those odors, he said: O people, when this day comes, bathe and let each of you apply the best oil and perfume he can find. Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) said: Then Allah عز وجل brought prosperity, and they wore clothes other than wool, and they no longer had to work, and their masjid was expanded, and some of the things that used to cause them discomfort from their odors were removed.'
