English Translation
Husayn narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Ayyub, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: When Hilal ibn Umayyah accused his wife (of adultery), it was said to him: 'By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will flog you.' He said: 'Allah knows that I am truthful, and He will surely send down what will save my back from the flogging.' So the verse of li'an was revealed: 'And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves' [An-Nur 24:6-9]. the Prophet ﷺ called him, and he testified four times by Allah that he was truthful, then the fifth that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was lying. Then she was called, and she testified four times by Allah that he was lying, then on the fifth she hesitated, and it was said: She would be punished in the hereafter. So she said: 'I will not disgrace my people.' And she completed the fifth oath.
