حَدَّثَنِي حُجَيْنُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنِ ابْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ وَقَعَ فِي أَبٍ لِلْعَبَّاسِ كَانَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَلَطَمَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ فَجَاءَ قَوْمَهُ فَقَالُوا وَاللَّهِ لَنَلْطِمَنَّهُ كَمَا لَ
طَمَهُ فَلَبِسُوا السِّلَاحَ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَقَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَيُّ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ أَكْرَمُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَالُوا أَنْتَ قَالَ فَإِنَّ الْعَبَّاسَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ فَلَا تَسُبُّوا مَوْتَانَا فَتُؤْذُوا أَحْيَاءَنَا فَجَاءَ الْقَوْمُ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ غَضَبِكَ

English Translation
Hujayn ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me, Isra'il narrated to us, from 'Abd al-A'la, from Ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) that a man from the Ansar spoke ill of one of al-'Abbas's forefathers who lived in the pre-Islamic period. So al-'Abbas struck him. His people came and said: 'By Allah, we will strike him just as he struck him.' So they put on their weapons. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who ascended the pulpit and said: 'O people, who among the people of the earth is most honored before Allah?' They said: 'You.' He ﷺ said: 'Al-'Abbas is from me and I am from him. Do not insult our dead, thereby harming our living.'
