English Translation

'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn 'Amr ibn Ghalab informed us, from al-Hakam ibn 'Abdullah ibn al-A'raj, who said: I was with Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) in the house of al-Siqayah (the watering station), and he was reclining on a garment of his. I said: "O Abu 'Abbas, tell me about 'Ashura." He said: "About which aspect of it?" I said: "About its fast." He said: "When you see the crescent of Muharram, count nine, then wake on the ninth day fasting." I said: "Is that how Muhammad ﷺ used to fast it?" He said: "Yes."
