This hadith highlights that the Prophet ﷺ was 'shier than a virgin behind her veil' — the most intense description of shyness imaginable for the Arab audience. Yet this same shyness did not prevent the Prophet ﷺ from teaching, leading, commanding armies, or correcting people. This demonstrates the key distinction scholars make: praiseworthy hayaa restrains from sins and inappropriate behavior, not from righteous duties. Ibn Allan explains that this hadith provides the model — we take the Prophet ﷺ as our example of what true hayaa looks like in practice. Despite his intense shyness, he fulfilled every obligation without hesitation. Imam al-Nawawi uses this hadith to show that hayaa is not weakness but strength — the most complete human being who ever lived also had the most intense hayaa. The companion Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrates that the Prophet's hayaa was visible and people could see it on his face when he encountered something he disapproved of.
