The Ruling of Reciting Behind the Imam: The Prayer in Which the Recitation is Silent: The majority opinion is that the follower recites al-Fatihah for himself. The Prayer in Which the Recitation is Aloud: Three opinions. First Opinion: Reciting behind the Imam is obligatory in both aloud and silent prayers. Second Opinion: The follower does not recite behind the Imam. Third Opinion: The follower recites in prayers performed silently but not those performed aloud. The Strongest Opinion: The follower recites al-Fatihah behind the Imam when the Imam recites silently, and listens when the Imam recites aloud; if he cannot hear the Imam, he recites for himself.
The States of the Follower with the Imam: First State — Preceding the Imam: Prohibited. The prayer is rendered invalid if done deliberately. Second State — Agreement with the Imam: Disliked. Third State — Delaying in Following the Imam: Permissible with valid excuse; invalidates prayer if deliberate. Fourth State — Following: This is what is desired — the follower moves after the Imam has started each movement.
