Introduction: Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet ﷺ

مقدمة: الطب النبوي

Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet ﷺ — al-Tibb al-Nabawi — is one of the most celebrated and comprehensive works of Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d. 751 AH / 1350 CE) on the healing practices and medical guidance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is a foundational text of the field known as "prophetic medicine" (al-tibb al-nabawi), and alongside al-Dhahabi's work of the same name, it remains the most studied classical treatment of this subject.

The Prophet ﷺ was, through divine guidance, both a guide to spiritual and physical well-being. He prescribed specific foods, herbs, and practices for specific conditions; gave guidance on diet, fasting, and exercise; and provided comprehensive spiritual remedies (ruqyah, du'a, certain Quranic recitations) for illness of both body and soul. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has not sent down an illness without sending down a cure for it, known to those who know it and unknown to those who do not know it." (Ahmad).

Ibn al-Qayyim's work is organized around three types of prophetic medicine: spiritual medicine (treatment of the heart and soul through worship, remembrance, and reliance on Allah); natural medicine (the use of foods, herbs, and lifestyle practices that the Prophet ﷺ recommended, such as honey, black seed, olive oil, cupping, and Zamzam water); and prophetic guidance on preventing illness through proper diet, sleep, and exercise. The book provides the hadith evidence for each remedy alongside Ibn al-Qayyim's analysis of its medical logic from the perspective of classical Islamic medicine.

Ibn al-Qayyim's central insight is that the prophetic approach to medicine is holistic in a way that modern medicine is only beginning to recognize: that the state of the soul profoundly affects the health of the body, and that true healing addresses both. This insight — grounded in revelation and prophetic wisdom — makes this work as relevant to contemporary readers as to those of any previous century.
