English Translation
Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from 'Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما who said: When the verse was revealed: 'And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best' [6:152], and 'Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming fire into their bellies' [4:10], whoever had an orphan in his care separated his food from the orphan's food and his drink from the orphan's drink. Whatever remained of the orphan's food would be kept until the orphan ate it or it spoiled. This became a hardship for them, so they mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the verse was revealed: 'And they ask you about orphans. Say: Improvement for them is best. And if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers.' [2:220] So they mixed their food with the orphans' food and their drink with their drink.
