English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yusuf ibn Mihran — that when 'Uthman ibn Maz'un (رضي الله عنه) died, his wife said: 'Congratulations to you, O Ibn Maz'un, with Paradise!' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her an angry look and said: 'What makes you know? By Allah, I am the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I do not know what will be done with me.' ['Affan added: 'Nor with him.'] She said: 'O Messenger of Allah — your rider and companion?' This greatly distressed the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said that about 'Uthman, who was among the best of them. Later, when Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died, he said: 'Join our righteous predecessor, 'Uthman ibn Maz'un.' The women wept, and 'Umar began striking them with his whip. the Prophet ﷺ said to 'Umar: 'Leave them to weep — but beware of the wailing of Satan.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whatever comes from the heart and eye is from Allah and is mercy; whatever comes from the hand and tongue is from Satan.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat at the edge of the grave with Fatimah (رضي الله عنها) beside him weeping, and the Prophet ﷺ began wiping Fatimah's eye with his garment out of mercy for her.
