English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah — that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was near death, and men were in the room including 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Come, let me write for you something after which you will never go astray.' 'Umar said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been overcome by pain. We have the Quran — the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.' The people in the room disagreed and argued: some said 'Bring [writing materials] so he can write you something after which you will not go astray,' while others said what 'Umar said. When the clamor and dispute in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became excessive, he said: 'Get up [and leave].' 'Ubaydullah said: Ibn 'Abbas used to say: 'The calamity — the entire calamity — was what stood between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his writing that letter for them, due to their arguing and noise.'
