حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنِ ابْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَوَجَدَ يَهُودَ يَصُومُو
نَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا فَقَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَظِيمٌ يَوْمَ نَجَّى اللَّهُ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى شُكْرًا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَإِنِّي أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى وَأَحَقُّ بِصِيَامِهِ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَر بِصِيَامِهِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashura'. He said: 'What is this?' They said: 'This is a great day — the day Allah saved Musa (عليه السلام) and drowned the people of Pharaoh. Musa fasted it out of gratitude.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'I am closer to Musa and more deserving of his fast.' So he fasted it and commanded [others] to fast it.
