English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Miqsam, freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas — regarding the verse: 'And [remember] when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you [8:30]' — that the Quraysh consulted one night in Makkah. Some of them said: 'When morning comes, bind him with chains' — meaning the Prophet ﷺ. Others said: 'No, kill him.' And others said: 'No, expel him.' Allah (عز وجل) informed His Prophet (ﷺ) of this. So 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) slept in the Prophet ﷺ's bed that night, and the Prophet ﷺ departed until he reached the cave [of Thawr]. The polytheists spent the night guarding 'Ali, thinking he was the Prophet ﷺ. When morning came, they rushed to [the bed] — but when they saw 'Ali, Allah turned their plot back on them. They said: 'Where is your companion?' He said: 'I do not know.' They followed his tracks, and when they reached the mountain they became confused. They climbed the mountain and passed by the cave, and saw a spider's web over its entrance. They said: 'Had anyone entered here, the spider's web would not be over the entrance.' [the Prophet ﷺ] remained in it for three nights.
