English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Sa'id ibn Jubayr — that Ibn 'Abbas said: 'The first women to wear a girdle [mintaq] did so because of the mother of Isma'il — she wore a girdle to conceal her tracks from Sarah.' He then mentioned the hadith [of Hajar and Zamzam]. Ibn 'Abbas said: 'May Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma'il — had she left Zamzam alone, or not scooped up the water, Zamzam would have been a free-flowing spring.' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'the Prophet ﷺ said: 'She [Hajar] was found by [the tribe of] Jurhum, for she loved human company — so they settled there and sent for their families, who settled with them.' And [Ibn 'Abbas] said in his narration: 'She came down from al-Safa, and when she reached the valley she lifted the hem of her dress and ran as a person runs in exhaustion, until she crossed the valley, then came to al-Marwah and stood on it, looking to see if she could see anyone. She saw no one. She did this seven times.' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'the Prophet ﷺ said: 'That is why people run [sa'y] between them [Safa and Marwah].'
