English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Dhakwan, freed slave of 'A'ishah — that he sought permission for Ibn 'Abbas to enter upon 'A'ishah while she was dying. Her nephew 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman was with her. He said: 'Ibn 'Abbas seeks permission to enter upon you — he is among the best of your sons.' She said: 'Leave me from Ibn 'Abbas and his praise.' 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman said to her: 'He is a reciter of the Book of Allah, deeply learned in the religion of Allah — let him enter to greet you and bid you farewell.' She said: 'Give him permission if you wish.' He gave permission and Ibn 'Abbas entered, greeted her, and sat down. He said: 'Rejoice, O Mother of the Believers! By Allah, nothing stands between you and the departure of all harm and fatigue — or he said: illness — and meeting your beloved [ones]: Muhammad (ﷺ) and his party — or he said: his Companions — except that your soul depart your body.' She replied: 'And more [may follow upon my death].' Ibn 'Abbas said: 'You were the most beloved of the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to him — and he loved only the pure. Allah (عز وجل) revealed your innocence from above the seven heavens, and there is no mosque on earth in which it is not recited by night and by day. And your necklace was lost at al-Abwa', and the Prophet ﷺ and his people stayed [searching] for it — or he said: seeking it — until the people spent the morning without water. Then Allah (عز وجل) revealed: 'Then perform tayammum with clean earth [4:43].' This was a concession for all people, granted on account of you — so by Allah, you are truly blessed.' She said: 'Leave off this, O Ibn 'Abbas — by Allah, I wish I had been forgotten and neglected.'
