Hadith #156

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Sufyan, from 'Asim, from Abi Wa'il — that 'Abdullah said: 'We used to give salam to the Prophet ﷺ while we were in Makkah, before we came to the land of Abyssinia. When we returned from the land of Abyssinia, we came to him and gave him salam, but he did not return it. I was overcome with [feelings] both near and far until he finished the prayer. Then I asked him. He said: Indeed, Allah (عز وجل) introduces into His command whatever He wills — and He has now introduced into His command that we do not speak during prayer.'
