Hadith #170

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from 'Alqama — that 'Abdullah said: 'When this verse was revealed: Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing [6:82] — it weighed heavily on the people and they said: O Messenger of Allah, which of us does not wrong himself? He said: It is not as you mean. Did you not hear what the righteous servant said: O my son, do not associate partners with Allah — indeed shirk is a great wrongdoing [31:13]? It is merely shirk.'
