Hadith #192
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّهِ نِدًّا
وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ قَالَ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ حَلِيلَةَ جَارِكَ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ { وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا }
Isnad Chain
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Shaqiq — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: Which sin is the greatest? He said: That you set up a rival for Allah while He created you. [The questioner] said: Then what? He said: That you kill your child fearing he will eat with you. He said: Then what? He said: That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife. 'Abdullah said: And Allah revealed its confirmation: And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse — whoever does these things will meet grave punishment [25:68].'
