English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Shaqiq — that 'Abdullah said: 'We used to, when we sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the prayer, say: Peace be upon Allah before His servants; peace be upon Jibril; peace be upon Mika'il; peace be upon so-and-so; peace be upon so-and-so. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard us and said: Indeed Allah IS al-Salam. When one of you sits in the prayer, let him say: Al-tahiyyatu lillahi wa al-salawatu wa al-tayyibat. Al-salamu 'alayka ayyuha al-nabiyyu wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatuh. Al-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibad Allahi al-salihin [All greetings belong to Allah, and all prayers and goodly words. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah]. When he says this, it reaches every righteous servant in the heaven and the earth. [Then:] Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Then he may choose after that whatever supplication he wishes.'
