English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Isma'il, from Ibn 'Awn, from 'Amr ibn Sa'id, from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman — that he said: 'Ibn Mas'ud said: I was never excluded from private consultations [al-najwa], nor from such-and-such, nor from such-and-such. Ibn 'Awn said: He forgot one thing and I forgot one thing. He said: I came to him and Malik ibn Murara al-Rahawi was with him. I caught the end of his speech, in which he was saying: O Messenger of Allah, I have been blessed with beauty as you can see — and I would not wish for anyone to surpass me even by the value of a sandal strap or more. Is that not kibr [arrogance]? He said: No, that is not arrogance. Arrogance is the one who scorns the truth [batira al-haqq] — or he said: treats the truth with contempt [safiha al-haqq] — and despises people.'
