English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd, from Aban ibn Ishaq, from al-Sabbah ibn Muhammad, from Murra al-Hamdani — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said one day: Be truly shy of Allah as is His due. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we are shy of Allah — and all praise is to Allah. He said: That is not [the true shyness]. Rather, whoever is truly shy of Allah must guard his head and what it contains, and guard his belly and what it holds, and remember death and decay. And whoever desires the Hereafter should forsake the adornments of this world. Whoever does that has been truly shy of Allah (عز وجل) as is His due.'
