English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd, from Aban ibn Ishaq, from al-Sabbah ibn Muhammad, from Murra al-Hamdani — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah has distributed your characters [akhlaq] among you just as He has distributed your provisions [rizq] among you. Allah gives the world to those He loves and those He does not love, but He gives the religion [din] only to those He loves — so whoever Allah gives the religion to, He loves him. By the One in Whose Hand my soul is, a servant does not [truly] submit until his heart and his tongue submit; and he does not [truly] believe until his neighbour is safe from his wrongdoing [bawa'iq]. They said: And what is his wrongdoing, O Prophet of Allah? He said: His violence [ghashm] and his injustice. And a servant does not earn wealth through what is unlawful [haram] and spend from it — receiving blessing therein — nor give it in charity and have it accepted, nor leave it behind except that it becomes his provision to the Fire. Indeed Allah does not wipe out the evil with the evil — He wipes out the evil with the good. Indeed the impure does not wipe away the impure.'
