حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ عَنْ زِرٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَمَّا قُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ الْأَنْصَارُ مِنَّا أَمِيرٌ وَمِنْكُمْ أَمِيرٌ فَأَتَاهُمْ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ أ
َلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَؤُمَّ النَّاسَ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَأَيُّكُمْ تَطِيبُ نَفْسُهُ أَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ قَالَتْ الْأَنْصَارُ نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ نَتَقَدَّمَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ

English Translation
Mu'awiyah ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Za'idah narrated to us, 'Asim narrated to us, from Zirr, from 'Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) رضي الله عنه who said: When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, the Ansar said: 'From us a leader and from you a leader.' 'Umar came to them and said: 'O gathering of the Ansar, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer? Which of you would feel comfortable preceding Abu Bakr?' The Ansar said: 'We seek refuge in Allah from preceding Abu Bakr.'
