حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ قَالَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ صِلَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ جَاءَ الْعَاقِبُ وَالسَّيِّدُ صَاحِبَا نَجْرَانَ قَالَ وَأَرَادَا أَنْ يُلَاعِنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تُلَاعِنْهُ فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ نَبِيًّا فَلَعَنَّا قَالَ خَلَفٌ فَلَاعَنَّا لَا نُفْلِحُ نَحْنُ وَلَا عَقِبُنَا أَبَدًا قَالَ فَأَتَيَاهُ فَقَالَا لَا
نُلَاعِنُكَ وَلَكِنَّا نُعْطِيكَ مَا سَأَلْتَ فَابْعَثْ مَعَنَا رَجُلًا أَمِينًا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ رَجُلًا أَمِينًا حَقَّ أَمِينٍ حَقَّ أَمِينٍ قَالَ فَاسْتَشْرَفَ لَهَا أَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ قُمْ يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَفَّا قَالَ هَذَا أَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ

English Translation
Aswad narrated, and Khalaf ibn al-Walid also narrated to us, Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Silah, from Ibn Mas'ud who said: al-'Aqib and al-Sayyid, the two chiefs of Najran, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanting to engage in mutual imprecation (mula'anah). One of them said to the other: Do not do it, for by Allah, if he is indeed a Prophet and we invoke mutual cursing against him, neither we nor our descendants after us will ever prosper. So they (instead) said: We will give you what you ask. the Prophet ﷺ sent a trustworthy man with them and said: 'I will send with you a man who is truly trustworthy.' The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were eager for this role. He said: 'Stand up, O Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah.' When he stood up, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is the trustworthy one (amin) of this ummah.'
