English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Safwan ibn 'Isa, from al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from Mujahid, from Ibn Sakhbara — that he said: 'I walked early in the morning with 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud from Mina to 'Arafat, and he was reciting the talbiya. 'Abdullah was a dark-complexioned man with two braids, with the look of a desert dweller. A rabble of people gathered around him and said: O Bedouin, this is not a day for talbiya — this is a day for takbir! At that, he turned to me and said: Have the people become ignorant, or have they forgotten? By the One who sent Muhammad (ﷺ) with the truth, I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he never abandoned the talbiya until he threw the jamra of 'Aqaba — except that he would intersperse it with takbir and tahlil.'
