English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya ibn Adam, from Zuhayr, from Abi Ishaq, from al-Aswad ibn Yazid and 'Alqama — that 'Abdullah said: 'A man came to him and said: I read al-Mufassal in one rak'a. He said: You rattled through it like rattling off poetry — or like scattering inferior dates [al-daqal]. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do as you did. He used to read the paired surahs [al-nuzur] — al-Rahman and al-Najm — in one rak'a.' Abu Ishaq mentioned ten rak'as [containing] twenty surahs according to 'Abdullah's arrangement, the last of which were: 'When the Sun Is Wound Round' [al-Takwir, 81] and 'al-Dukhan' [44].
