حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَ
اعِيلُ عَنْ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كُنَّا نَغْزُو مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَيْسَ لَنَا نِسَاءٌ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَا نَسْتَخْصِي فَنَهَانَا عَنْهُ ثُمَّ رُخِّصَ لَنَا بَعْدُ فِي أَنْ نَتَزَوَّجَ الْمَرْأَةَ بِالثَّوْبِ إِلَى أَجَلٍ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُحَرِّمُوا طَيِّبَاتِ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ }

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd, from Isma'il, from Qays — that 'Abdullah said: 'We used to go on military campaigns with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no women [available to us]. We said: O Messenger of Allah, should we not castrate ourselves? He forbade us from that. Then it was later permitted for us to contract [temporary] marriage with a woman for a garment [as payment], for a fixed term. Then 'Abdullah recited: "O you who believe, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love transgressors" [5:87].'
