Hadith #117

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba — I heard Yahya ibn al-Mujabbir say: I heard Abu Majid al-Hanafi say: 'I was sitting with 'Abdullah. He said: I recall the first man whose hand was cut [by the Prophet ﷺ for theft]. A thief was brought and [the Prophet ﷺ] ordered his hand cut. It was as if ash had been sprinkled on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [from displeasure]. They said: O Messenger of Allah, it is as though you disliked his hand being cut. He said: What would prevent me [from disliking it]? Do not be helpers of Satan against your brother. Yet when a prescribed punishment [hadd] reaches the ruler, he is obliged to carry it out. Indeed Allah (عز وجل) is Pardoning and loves pardon: 'And let them pardon and overlook — do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful' [24:22].' — [Second chain] via 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Sufyan, from Yahya ibn 'Abdillah al-Taymi, from Abi Majid al-Hanafi — he mentioned the same meaning, and said: 'As if ash had been sprinkled on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ' — meaning: as though ashes were scattered over it.
