Hadith #120
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ شِمَالِهِ حَتَّى أَرَى بَيَاضَ وَجْهِهِ فَمَا نَسِيتُ بَعْدُ فِيمَا نَسِيتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Jabir, from Abi al-Duha, from Masruq — from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — that he used to give salam to his right and to his left until the whiteness of his cheek became visible [to observers]. [Masruq says]: Among the things I have not forgotten — despite [all] that I have forgotten — is [the wording]: 'Al-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah, al-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah [Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah; peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah].'
