Hadith #151

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Shu'ba, from Sulayman and Mansur, from Abi al-Duha, from Masruq — that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Quraysh defying him, he said: 'O Allah, aid me against them with seven like the seven of Yusuf.' A famine then seized them until it stripped everything bare, until they ate hides and bones — and one of the two narrators says: until they ate hides and carrion. And what appeared like smoke would rise from a man [from extreme hunger]. Abu Sufyan came to him and said: O Muhammad, your people have perished — supplicate to Allah (عز وجل) to remove [the hardship] from them. He supplicated. Then — this is in Mansur's narration — he said: 'O Allah, if they return [to their ways], then return [the punishment].' Then he recited this verse: 'So watch for the day when the sky brings a visible smoke' [44:10].
