English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki', from Sufyan, from Hakim ibn Jubayr, from Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, from his father — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever asks [for charity] while having what suffices him — his asking will come on the Day of Resurrection as scratches or lacerations on his face.' They said: O Messenger of Allah, what is [the threshold of] sufficiency? He said: 'Fifty dirhams, or its equivalent in gold.'
