'Abdullah [ibn Ahmad] said: I read to my father [the hadiths] from this point on and he confirmed them. It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Mu'awiya ibn 'Amr, from Za'ida, from 'Asim ibn Abi al-Najud, from Zirr — that the Prophet ﷺ came and found [Ibn Mas'ud] between Abu Bakr and 'Umar while 'Abdullah was praying. He [Ibn Mas'ud] began Surah al-Nisa' and recited it through [rapidly and fluently]. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever wishes to recite the Quran fresh [ghadan] as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd [Ibn Mas'ud].' Then ['Abdullah] stepped forward to ask [for something], and the Prophet ﷺ kept saying: 'Ask and you will be given — ask and you will be given — ask and you will be given.' Among what he asked was: 'O Allah, I ask You for faith that does not waver, bliss that does not end, and the companionship of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the highest levels of the eternal Paradise.' 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) then went to give 'Abdullah the good news, but found Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) had already preceded him. ['Umar] said: If you have done it, then you have always been first in good deeds.
