English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Muharibi, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim — others say: from 'Alqama — that 'Abdullah said: 'While we were in the mosque on Thursday night, a man from the Ansar said: By Allah, if a man finds a man with his wife and speaks [about it], he will be lashed; if he kills him, he will be killed; and if he stays silent, he will bear his rage in silence. By Allah, if morning comes I will go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, if a man finds a man with his wife and speaks, he will be lashed; if he kills him, he will be killed; if he stays silent, he stays silent in rage. And he kept saying: O Allah, open [a way]! O Allah, open! Then the verse of mutual li'an was revealed: 'And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves...' [24:6] — the verse.'
