حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا رَبَاحٌ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُقْبَةَ أَخَّرَ الصَّلَاةَ مَرَّةً فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَثَوَّبَ بِالصّ
َلَاةِ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ الْوَلِيدُ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى مَا صَنَعْتَ أَجَاءَكَ مِنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمْرٌ فِيمَا فَعَلْتَ أَمْ ابْتَدَعْتَ قَالَ لَمْ يَأْتِنِي أَمْرٌ مِنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَمْ أَبْتَدِعْ وَلَكِنْ أَبَى اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْنَا وَرَسُولُهُ أَنْ نَنْتَظِرَكَ بِصَلَاتِنَا وَأَنْتَ فِي حَاجَتِكَ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Ibrahim ibn Khalid, from Rabah, from Ma'mar, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Uthman, from al-Qasim, from his father — that al-Walid ibn 'Uqba once delayed the prayer. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud stood up and called the [second call for] prayer and led the people in prayer. Al-Walid sent to him: What led you to do what you did? Did an order come to you from the Commander of the Faithful for what you did, or did you introduce an innovation? He said: No order came to me from the Commander of the Faithful and I have not innovated. Rather, Allah (عز وجل) and His Messenger have not permitted us to keep waiting for you in our prayer while you are occupied with your own affairs.
