English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad al-Nakha'i, from his father — that he said: 'Surah al-Mursalat [77] was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of the snake.' He was asked: 'And what is the night of the snake, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman?' He said: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Hira' one night, a snake came out from the mountain toward us. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to kill it, but we searched for it and it eluded us. He said: "Leave it alone — Allah has protected it from your harm, just as He has protected you from its harm."'
