حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ أَظُنُّهُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَن
ِ بْنِ الْمِسْوَرِ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي أُمَّةٍ قَبْلِي إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ حَوَارِيُّونَ وَأَصْحَابٌ يَأْخُذُونَ بِسُنَّتِهِ وَيَقْتَدُونَ بِأَمْرِهِ ثُمَّ إِنَّهَا تَخْلُفُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ خُلُوفٌ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا لَا يُؤْمَرُونَ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from al-Harith — whom I think means Ibn Fudayl — from Ja'far ibn 'Abdillah ibn al-Hakam, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Miswar, from Abu Rafi' — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There has not been a prophet sent by Allah (عز وجل) to any nation before me except that he had among his nation disciples [hawariyyun] and companions who followed his Sunnah and adhered to his command. Then after them came successors [khuluf] who say what they do not do, and do what they are not commanded.'
