Hadith #311

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي قَرِيبٍ مِنْ ثَمَانِينَ رَجُلًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ لَيْسَ فِيهِمْ إِلَّا قُرَشِيٌّ
لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ صَفْحَةَ وُجُوهِ رِجَالٍ قَطُّ أَحْسَنَ مِنْ وُجُوهِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فَذَكَرُوا النِّسَاءَ فَتَحَدَّثُوا فِيهِنَّ فَتَحَدَّثَ مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى أَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ يَسْكُتَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَتَشَهَّدَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ فَإِنَّكُمْ أَهْلُ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ مَا لَمْ تَعْصُوا اللَّهَ فَإِذَا عَصَيْتُمُوهُ بَعَثَ إِلَيْكُمْ مَنْ يَلْحَاكُمْ كَمَا يُلْحَى هَذَا الْقَضِيبُ لِقَضِيبٍ فِي يَدِهِ ثُمَّ لَحَا قَضِيبَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ أَبْيَضُ يَصْلِدُ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Utba — that he said: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — close to eighty men from Quraysh, none among them but a Qurashi — by Allah, I have never seen the faces of men more handsome than theirs on that day. They were speaking about women and conversing about them, and he joined their conversation — until I wished he would fall silent. Then he came to them, bore testimony [al-shahadatayn], and said: "As for what follows — O company of Quraysh, you are the people of this [leadership] so long as you do not disobey Allah. If you disobey Him, He will send against you one who will strip you bare as this branch is stripped" — [gesturing to] a branch in his hand. He then peeled the branch and it was white and gleaming.'
