English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from Abu 'Umays 'Utba ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Utba ibn 'Abdillah ibn Mas'ud, from Abu Fazara, from Abu Zayd — freed slave of 'Amr ibn Hurayth al-Makhzumi — that he said: 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Mecca — and he was in a group of his companions — he said: "Let a man stand with me from among you — but let no man stand with me who has the weight of a mustard seed of treachery in his heart." I stood with him, taking a water vessel — thinking it contained nothing but water. I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we reached the upper part of Mecca, where I saw dark gathered shapes. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew a circle for me [on the ground] and said: "Stand here until I return to you." I stood and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went toward them. I saw them rushing forward to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conversed with them through much of the night — until he came back to me near dawn. He said: "Have you been standing this whole time, O Ibn Mas'ud?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you not say to me: 'Stand until I return to you'?" He then said: "Do you have anything for ablution?" I said: "Yes." I opened the vessel — and it contained nabidh. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I took the vessel thinking it contained nothing but water — and it is nabidh!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A wholesome date and pure water." He then performed ablution from it. When he stood to pray, two of them [from the jinn] came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we would love for you to lead us in our prayer." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lined them up behind him and prayed with us. When he finished, I said: "Who are these, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "These are the jinn of Nasibin. They came to me to dispute matters that had arisen among them and asked me for provisions — so I provisioned them." I said: "And what did you have to provision them with, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I provisioned them with dung — whatever dung they find they will find [transformed into] barley — and whatever bone they find they will find it covered with flesh." At that point, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade using dung and bones to clean oneself [after relieving oneself].'
