Hadith #313

English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Ya'qub, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad al-Nakha'i, from his father — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me the tashahhud in the middle of the prayer and at its end. We would preserve [this from] 'Abdullah when he informed us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught it to him. He would say it when he sat in the middle of the prayer or at its end, [sitting] on his left hip: "Al-tahiyyatu lillahi wal-salawatu wal-tayyibat, al-salamu 'alayka ayyuha al-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, al-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadi llahi al-salihin, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh [All greetings of honor are for Allah, and all prayers and good deeds; peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger]." If it was in the middle of the prayer, he would rise when he finished the tashahhud; and if it was at the end, he would supplicate after the tashahhud for as long as Allah willed, then give the salam.'
