English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Hasan ibn Musa, from Hudayj [brother of Zuhayr ibn Mu'awiya], from Abu Ishaq, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Utba — that he said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to the Negus [al-Najashi]. We were about eighty men, among them 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, Ja'far [ibn Abi Talib], 'Abdullah ibn 'Arfuta, 'Uthman ibn Maz'un, and Abu Musa. They came to the Negus. Quraysh sent 'Amr ibn al-'As and 'Umara ibn al-Walid with gifts. When those two entered upon the Negus, they prostrated to him, then positioned themselves on his right and left and said: "A group of our cousins' sons have settled in your land, having abandoned us and our religion." He said: "Where are they?" They said: "In your land — send for them." He sent for them. Ja'far said: "I will be your spokesman today" — and they agreed. He greeted with salam but did not prostrate. They said: "What is the matter — why do you not prostrate to the king?" He said: "We only prostrate to Allah (عز وجل)." [The king asked:] "And what is this about?" He said: "Allah (عز وجل) sent us His Messenger (ﷺ) and commanded us not to prostrate to anyone but Allah (عز وجل) — and He commanded us to pray and pay zakat." 'Amr ibn al-'As said: "They differ with you regarding Jesus son of Mary." [The king said:] "What do you say about Jesus son of Mary and his mother?" They said: "We say what Allah (عز وجل) said — he is the word of Allah and His spirit, which He cast to the Virgin, pure, untouched by any man and unparented by any child." The Negus picked up a twig from the ground and said: "O company of Abyssinians, priests and monks — by Allah, they add not a hair's breadth beyond what we say about him!" He said: "Welcome to you, and welcome to the one from whom you have come. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — for he is the one we find in the Gospel, and the Messenger whose coming Jesus son of Mary foretold. Settle wherever you wish. By Allah, were it not for the kingdom I hold, I would come to him so that I could carry his sandals and perform his ablution." He ordered the gifts of the other two returned to them. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud then hastened back and was present at Badr. It is said that the Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness for [the Negus] when news of his death reached him.'
