English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Yahya, from al-A'mash, from Shaqiq — that 'Abdullah said: 'When we would sit with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the prayer, we used to say: Peace be upon Allah from His servants; peace be upon so-and-so and so-and-so. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do not say 'Peace be upon Allah', for indeed Allah is al-Salam [the Peace]. But when one of you sits [in the prayer], let him say: Al-tahiyyatu lillahi wal-salawatu wal-tayyibat, al-salamu 'alayka ayyuha al-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, al-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadi llahi al-salihin [All greetings of honor are for Allah, and all prayers and good deeds; peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah]. For when you say that, it reaches every righteous servant between the heavens and the earth. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then let each of you choose the supplication he likes most and supplicate with it.'
