حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ الْمَعْنَى قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَيُّ الذَّنْبِ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ لِلَّه
ِ نِدًّا وَهُوَ خَلَقَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ وَلَدَكَ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنْ يَطْعَمَ مَعَكَ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَنْ تُزَانِيَ بِحَلِيلَةِ جَارِكَ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ تَصْدِيقَ ذَلِكَ فِي كِتَابِهِ { وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا }
English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) — via Waki' and Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from Abi Wa'il — that 'Abdullah said: 'A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Which sin is greatest? He said: That you set up a rival to Allah when He created you. He said: Then what? He said: Then that you kill your child for fear that he will eat with you. He said: Then what? He said: Then that you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife. Allah (عز وجل) then revealed in His Book the confirmation of that: 'And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity...' [25:68] to His words: '...and whoever does that shall meet a grievous penalty' [25:68].'
