حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ غَيْلَانَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ الثَّقَفِيَّ أَسْلَمَ وَتَحْتَهُ عَشْرُ نِسْوَةٍ فَق
َالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اخْتَرْ مِنْهُنَّ أَرْبَعًا فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي عَهْدِ عُمَرَ طَلَّقَ نِسَاءَهُ وَقَسَمَ مَالَهُ بَيْنَ بَنِيهِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَظُنُّ الشَّيْطَانَ فِيمَا يَسْتَرِقُ مِنْ السَّمْعِ سَمِعَ بِمَوْتِكَ فَقَذَفَهُ فِي نَفْسِكَ وَلَعَلَّكَ أَنْ لَا تَمْكُثَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَتُرَاجِعَنَّ نِسَاءَكَ وَلَتَرْجِعَنَّ فِي مَالِكَ أَوْ لَأُوَرِّثُهُنَّ مِنْكَ وَلَآمُرَنَّ بِقَبْرِكَ فَيُرْجَمُ كَمَا رُجِمَ قَبْرُ أَبِي رِغَالٍ

English Translation
It was narrated from [Ibn 'Umar] (رضي الله عنهما) — via Isma'il and Muhammad ibn Ja'far, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri — Ibn Ja'far says in his version: Ibn Shihab informed us — from Salim, from his father — that Ghaylan ibn Salama al-Thaqafi embraced Islam while having ten wives. the Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Choose four of them.' During the reign of 'Umar (رضي الله عنه), [Ghaylan] divorced his [remaining] wives and divided his wealth among his sons. When 'Umar heard of this, he said: 'I believe the devil, through what he eavesdrops from the heavens, heard news of your death and cast [the thought] into your heart. Perhaps you will remain [alive] only a little while. By Allah, you will take back your wives and your wealth — or I will have them inherit from you, and I will order your grave to be stoned as the grave of Abu Righal was stoned.'
