English Translation

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Abbad ibn al-'Awwam, from Sufyan ibn Husayn, from al-Zuhri, from Salim — that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote down [the rules for] zakat but did not send it out to his tax collectors until he passed away — and he kept it attached to his sword. When he passed away, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) acted on it until he died, then 'Umar acted on it until he died. In it was written: 'On five camels — one sheep; on ten — two sheep; on fifteen — three sheep; on twenty — four sheep; on twenty-five — a bint makhad [one-year-old female camel].' — ['Abdullah ibn Ahmad says:] My father then suffered an illness during the session of 'Abbad ibn al-'Awwam. I wrote down the rest of the hadith [from the dictation], but I believe I did not fully comprehend some of it and had doubts about the remainder, so I left it. I included this hadith in the Musnad [placed here] within the hadiths of al-Zuhri from Salim, because [my father] had gathered the hadiths of al-Zuhri from Salim and narrated them to us under [the heading of] Salim's hadiths — from Muhammad ibn Yazid in complete form — and from 'Abbad, from 'Abbad ibn al-'Awwam.
